Acupuncture for Insomnia & Sleep Disorders
Poor Sleep
Acupuncture is often said to be the “cure-all” for anything and everything leading people to either see acupuncture as an amazing alternative medicine or just a sham. Modern research has even demonstrated that acupuncture actually stimulates the body’s various systems. It can help resolve pain, improve sleep, your body’s digestive functions, and sense of well-being in the nervous system, endocrine/immune systems, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. As a result, our topic of the month for July is poor sleep, which is often associated with Insomnia although it consists of other sleeping disorders as well.
What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is the inability to initiate or maintain adequate nighttime sleep. Insomnia is one of the most sought out reasons for why people seek acupuncture. Patients often come to an acupuncturist because they are disconnected from other emotional issues they are facing. These oppressed emotions often surface as insomnia, anxiety, or mild depression and as the stresses of our everyday lives take toll; our sleep becomes disturbed as our minds can no longer relax.
“Who’s most prone to Insomnia?” asks Canada’s Drug Center.
Time and time again Americans are getting less sleep. This not only gives us stress, but physically drains us as well. Insomnia and other sleeping disorders are no joke and should not be taken lightly. Symptoms of Insomnia include: Difficulty falling asleep, awakening during the night, awakening too early, not feeling well rested after sleeping, daytime tiredness, irritability, anxiety, difficulty focusing on tasks or remembering, etc.
Consider the following
About 40% of adults suffer from Insomnia. You may be thinking to yourself, “This doesn’t apply to me. I sleep just fine.” However, waking up fatigued or weary after a long night’s sleep may prove otherwise. Consider the following when preparing for a night’s rest:
- Get regular acupuncture treatments and ask for an herbal formula for your insomnia
- Avoid TV or using the computer one to two hours before bedtime
- Avoid substances that affect sleep (sugar, caffeine, alcohol)
- Eat lean protein, complex carbohydrates & lots of vegetables to stabilize blood sugar. Low blood sugar is often the cause for waking up in the middle of the night
- Eat your last meal of the day two to three hours before sleep so that you may digest that food
- Exercise daily for 30 minutes
- Get regular exposure to daylight for at least 20 minutes (preferably first thing in the morning to reset your sleep, mood, and energy cycles)
- Keep a regular bedtime. Turn the lights out by 10 p.m., if possible, and no later than 11 p.m.
